Is Yahoo Messenger unreliable?
Wednesday, November 29th, 2006Why YM is so unreliable lately? especially when you are connected to the internet through unreliable connection no matter what kind of media that you are using.
There are 2 types of YM unreliability that I experienced,
1. Although you are using wired broadband connection, if there is a strict firewall do NAT and/or statefull inspection, YM connection is disconnected and re-connected periodically. Even the flapping is done very fast, you will still have some missing messages from your chatting partner. Your partner will never know that his/her messages are not successfully delivered to your computer.
2. I noticed that when I was using GPRS or CDMA2000-1x connection or some similar low bandwidth wireless connection, i also experienced some lost messages. I tried to check with ethereal, i saw TCP retransmission was always occured for YM packet but not for any other packet.
Finally, from those two evidences above, i have a question, if Yahoo Messenger chatting service is using TCP based packet (using port 5010 for default connection, any wellknown TCP port number for any other direct connection or going through HTTP proxy), why doesn’t the sender have any information whether the message is successfully received or not.
If i may compare, with skype, you will know that your messages are sucessfully delivered or not, and where there is a problem with the receiver or the sender, you will get a notification saying that the message is still failed to be delivered and will be delivered when the connection is re-established.
SO, when will yahoo messenger becoming reliable??????
